Local directories often list real-life businesses. Some cases make it better for end-users to see locations on a map instead of a text list. This also helps to “find near me” cases.

Provide directories with a default home page

Currently, the default behavior is to display /browse at root of the website. We need to change that. Home page should display: - Hero section with search field and configurable background - Grid of the top-level categories with “show cover image” option set to “true” by default - List of the Collections in form of H2 + Listing Cards + Button “see all” - List of blog posts (probably grouped by Type, similar to Collections display) - Grid of the latest items added to the directory with link to the /browse page - ???

Allow to filter similar items by clicking on the Custom Attribute

For example, a user visited a Listing page. He sees some “tag” and would like to see other items with this tag.

Allow to display cover images instead of logos on the listing cards

Some directories work better by displaying cover images instead of logos on the listing cards. Add a switch in the site settings to toggle styling for cards globally. As for cover image input - it could be either a new field on the listing or just the first image of the listing’s gallery.

Add "Opening Hours" custom attribute type

Currently, it is somewhat solvable by using the “Text” custom attribute, but it doesn’t look good enough.

Add "Upvotes" to listings

Many users are asking about adding more UGC/UG actions. 1) Add “Upvote” to the Listing Page header 2) Display the number of upvotes on the listing cards 3) Add sorting by upvotes number to listing grids, apply default sorting as “most upvoted first” 4) Ask anonymous users to sign up/login once they click the “upvote” button. Just open login/signup pages in a new tab for the beginning.

Remove the "/browse" prefix from listings URL

Most of the directories wouldn’t have the “/browse” page browseable (e.g. they wouldn’t have a standalone landing page). When user did not define a standalone homepage, the /browse redirects to / It can have negative impact on SEO. Most of the specialists prefer shorter and meaningful urls. Basically, instead of /browse/my-category/listing-name We need to get to /my-category/listing-name It needs to be decided whether this prefix should be configurable or not.

Visitors may want to take control over their business presence in the directory. We will start with the simplest thing - a lead form asking for First and Last Names, E-Mail address and a message on who they are and why they believe this listing belongs to them.

Allow to display categories on the sidebar

Pretty much similar to filters, users might want to see categories on the sidebar to occupy less of the vertical space. It should work like Amazon categories: 1) Parent name/link 2) List of links of the categories on the same level 3) List of links of subcategories of the currently selected one.
